Eat this Little Red Berry for Your Heart

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

I just love cranberry sauce.

And not just at Thanksgiving. I love it year round. In fact, I go to Trader Joe’s in the fall and buy two whole cases of the stuff to last me the year.

Mix in some orange and lemon zest… I just love it!

Now let’s be clear. I am not talking about that Ocean Spray large, loose jelly monster that comes out of a can… completely intact with ridges still on it. Continue reading

Is a Leaky Gut Making You Sick?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

July 30, 2018

  • Why aren’t autoimmune diseases getting more attention?
  • Leaky gut syndrome may be destroying your health
  • 5 ways to restore gut health to prevent (and reverse!) autoimmune disorders

Autoimmune diseases are continuing their rise these days. However, they don’t get nearly the same amount of attention as heart disease, diabetes or cancer.

Well let me fill you in on a few facts.

  • Somewhere around 16.5 million U.S. adults have coronary heart disease.
  • It’s estimated that 15.1 million people here in America are living with cancer.
  • 23.4 million American adults are dealing with type 2 diabetes.

These are horrible numbers. And we hear about them all of the time. But the number of people with autoimmune disease may be much higher than any of these very real threats to your health. Continue reading

This Missing Mineral May be Robbing You of Vitamin D

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 2, 2018

  • An overlooked cause of vitamin D deficiency
  • Magnesium and vitamin D work hand-in-hand to protect your health
  • How to get more of the “missing” mineral

As unbelievable as it may sound, at least 40% of Americans are vitamin D deficient. And depending on what measure is used as the cut-off for deficiency, it could be as many as 75%.

This is a huge problem. It’s also why I recommend that everyone have their vitamin D levels tested.

But what happens if you’re low on this nutrient? Will taking a vitamin D supplement bring your levels back up to part? And what if you are taking vitamin D supplements and still insufficient in this nutrient?

Well, today I want to alert you to another deficiency that may actually be robbing your stores of vitamin D. Continue reading

3 Ancient Spices to Improve Your Health

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

March 23, 2018

  • The “spice of life” for all that ails you
  • Ginger for gastrointestinal distress, migraines and cancer
  • Cinnamon for your blood sugar, heart and memory

What’s inside your medicine cabinet? Is it loaded with antacids, pain relievers and prescription drugs?

Well, what if you could toss most of that stuff and rely almost exclusively on your spice rack to cure what ails you?

It might sound old-fashioned. But back in the day, herbs and spices were our medicine.

In fact, many of today’s most common medications are based on synthetic versions of medicinal compounds that are already found in nature.

And I’ll be honest. I’d much rather cure myself with natural compounds than ones that are manmade. Continue reading

Everybody knows that excess alcohol consumption can lead to fatty liver disease. But I’ll bet you’ll be surprised to find out that one of the food groups you eat every day also contributes to fatty liver.

It’s not fatty foods. And it’s not protein. It’s all of the refined and high glycemic carbohydrates that are so common in today’s modern diet. Continue reading

Your Health Depends on this “Forgotten” Organ

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

February 16, 2018

  • Is your gut making you sick?
  • Feed this “forgotten organ” for health and longevity
  • Give it some exercise, too!

You can’t see your heart. Still, you try to take good care of it.

You can’t see your brain, either. However, that doesn’t stop you from trying to ward off dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

But what do you do for your gut?

This is a question I often ask my patients. And most of them just shake their heads. They have no idea what the answer is. After all, unless you experience heartburn, an upset stomach, diarrhea or constipation, you probably don’t pay much attention to it.

Big mistake!

These days the gut microbiome is often referred to as the “forgotten organ”. And for good reason. Continue reading

  • Does a poor mood and bad memory have you off your game?
  • Discover the ancient medicinal herb that boosts memory and brain function
  • Shake off the stress and anxiety of every day life

Among all of the health concerns I hear among my patients, there are several non-specific complaints that appear to crop up more frequently than others. They may sound familiar to you…

  • “My memory isn’t what it used to be.”
  • “I’m not as happy and energetic as I was just a few years ago.”
  • “I feel old, tired and cranky.”

You might think that these changes in mental status are just something you have to live with. But there is nothing further from the truth. Continue reading

Ignore these Food Groups at Your Own Peril

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

January 26, 2018

  • Two food groups Americans ignore at their own risk
  • Fruits and veggies save lives
  • How to get the most out of your produce

Everybody knows that eating fruits and vegetables is good for them.

So you might find it astonishing to learn that only 12% of U.S. adults eat the recommended one and a half to two cups of fruit each day. Even fewer – only 9% – are meeting the vegetable guidelines of two to three cups a day.

If anything, we should be eating more than the government’s recommendations, not less.

This is a very sad state of affairs; especially considering that higher intake of plant-based foods can stave off many of today’s killer diseases by helping to lower the expression of pro-inflammatory genes. Continue reading

  • Is your flight-or-fight response keeping you in an exhausted state?
  • My secret weapon for relaxed and alert energy all day long

Ever have those times when you feel exhausted, but still can’t rest? It’s an epidemic today.

People feel both “tired and wired” at the same time. They drag during the day, but then can’t sleep well at night. They need caffeine and sugar to keep them going during the day and then need something to help them sleep at night.

I have an expression for this. I call it “Living with full-time stress on a caveman’s coping mechanism.”

You see, whenever you feel threatened, your body goes into a “fight or flight” response. Continue reading

Got a Cough? Here’s What Works

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

December 4, 2017

  • It’s official. Cough medicines don’t work.
  • The science behind your cough
  • Here’s how to get rid of a nasty cough

It’s cold and flu season again. And one of the most annoying symptoms that come with these viral infections is the constant cough that never seems to go away. Sometimes it’s enough to make you feel like you’re going to hack your lungs right out of your throat.

As a result, I hear the same questions day after day…

… “Should I buy Robitussin or Mucinex?”

… “Do I need a suppressant or an expectorant?”

… “Will an antihistamine help dry me up?”

… “If I take an anti-inflammatory pain killer will my cough go away faster?”

Personally, I don’t recommend any of these options as a resolution to calm those hacking, lung-wrenching coughs coming from your chest. And it might surprise you to learn that the American College of Chest Physicians doesn’t recommend them, either. Continue reading
