Age-Proof Your Creaky Knees

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

April 15, 2022

Knee pain is a common problem, especially for older adults. And it’s no wonder!

With every step we take, the force on our knees is between two and three times our body weight. That means if you weigh 180 pounds, you put somewhere between 360 and 540 pounds of pressure on your knees with each step.

It depends on how fast you walk. Higher walking speeds increase the force, while jogging or running can more than double it. And the more weight you’re carrying, the greater the pressure on the knees. Continue reading

Busted! Arthritis Myths You Should Know About

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 13, 2021

People think arthritis only happens in old people. Ask any 40-year-old with arthritis, and they’ll tell you just how untrue that is. In fact, more than half of adults with arthritis are between the ages of 18 and 64.

The truth is that, even though we often call arthritis an age-related disease, it’s not actually caused by old age. Chronic inflammation, obesity, joint injury, diabetes, heart disease and all sorts of factors come in to play. It’s not just one thing. And it doesn’t care how old you are. You could be 15, 40, 60 or 90. You’re not immune.

So while a lot of people believe the “old-age” myth of arthritis, it’s just not true. Continue reading

Why Your Knee Pain is a Crying Shame

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 17, 2020

I’m always sympathetic when new patients come hobbling into my office with “bad knees”.

Believe it or not, it’s not just senior citizens who have this gripe. People from all age groups suffer knee pain.

In fact, here in the U.S., the number of people between 45 and 64 years of age who have symptoms of knee arthritis is nearly identical to those 65 and older. Continue reading

I had an 87-year-old patient who once gave me his recipe for a drink he called “Blood.”

Now, before you get too grossed out, let me explain…

Yes, his bright red juice looked a lot like blood. But this name was appropriate for another reason. Continue reading

4 Every Day Foods that are Making your Knee Pain Worse

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 6, 2019

When Janet came to my office last month, she said her knees were bothering her.

They were stiff and creaky when she got out of bed in the morning. Sometimes they would give off a painful little pop when getting up from her chair. Going up and down stairs often produced a sharp pain in mid-step.

And it was getting worse. Continue reading

Take This Super Spice for Joint Pain

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

September 5, 2018

  • Is this what’s making you sick?
  • Shut down inflammation with the “Spice of Life”
  • And give your memory a boost, too!

The underlying cause of most age-related diseases today is inflammation. It plays a prominent role in conditions such as arthritis, joint pain, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and even Alzheimer’s disease.

But here’s an unfortunate truth. Low levels of inflammation can exist in your body for years on end without you even knowing it. This puts you squarely at risk for almost every age-related disorder known to man.

This is why I often discuss the importance of eating an anti-inflammatory diet.

It’s not really all that hard to do. Just fill your meals with plenty of fresh, organic, antioxidant-rich fruits, vegetables and legumes. Add healthy fats and oils wherever possible. Enjoy wild-caught fish loaded with heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids over red meats.

These foods all have a place in your diet if you want to shut down inflammation.

But I also have a secret weapon. Continue reading

5 Nutrients to Prevent Hip Fractures

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 17, 2018

  • Osteoporosis and hip fractures aren’t restricted to the elderly
  • The diet that keeps your bones strong and healthy
  • Mineral trio + vitamin duo enhances bone growth and density

As your bones weaken with age, one of the worst things that can happen is that you lose your balance or trip over something, fall down and break a hip.

Now, you may think you’re too young to even consider such an event. But what you may not realize is that your bones reach maximum strength and density around the age of 30. After that, bone mass gradually starts breaking down. Continue reading

2 Minutes a Day to Better Posture

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

March 28, 2018

  • Is poor posture causing your back pain?
  • A great way to improve posture and prevent back problems
  • Sit tall for a stronger spine

Many of today’s back problems aren’t caused by “bad backs”. Instead, they are a result of years and years of bad habits. We slouch when we sit and hunch when we walk. Some people jut their hips forward, others push their derrieres out.

You may not even realize how bad your posture is. But the truth is, a lot of people simply don’t know how to stand and sit up straight anymore. This places a huge burden on your spine, and can eventually lead to permanent physical changes.

At some point – if not already – you’ll start experiencing painful problems with your discs, vertebrae, spinal muscles and joints. And once these problems start to kick in on a regular basis, they can be very difficult to treat.

This is why I recommend that you start developing healthy back practices right now. It’s the one, single thing you can do to save yourself from years of disability due to chronic and debilitating back pain. Continue reading

4 Causes of Elbow Pain (And What to do about it!)

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

June 14, 2017

  • A painful elbow doesn’t necessarily mean you have “tennis elbow”
  • How to identify repetitive strain injuries
  • When your funny bone isn’t so funny

When people come into my office with unexplained aches, pains or numbness in one elbow or another, they often describe their condition as “tennis elbow”.

And in many cases, they’ve looked this term up on the internet to set their own treatment schedule, only to find that it’s not working.

The reason is pretty simple. Not all aches and pains of the elbow are the same. So if you’re treating yourself for tennis elbow, you may be aggravating another condition that’s causing your elbow pain.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some things that could be at the source of your elbow pain. Continue reading

4 Nutrients for Stronger Bones

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

March 21, 2016

  • Weak bones aren’t confined to the elderly
  • Foods that are robbing your bone strength
  • 4 nutrients for stronger bones

You might think you’re protected from bone loss, fractures and breaks because you’re still in your 50’s or 60’s. But I’ll bet you didn’t know that about 40% of folks in this age group already have low bone mass in their hips or spine.

And it’s not just a “woman’s” problem. More than one in three men is vulnerable to this condition.

In fact, the husband of one of my patients recently had a minor fall in the bathroom. He’s only 62 years old, and ended up in the hospital with a broken hip. Two of the four breaks occurred in his femur, which is the longest and strongest bone in your body.

So if you think you’re still too young (or the wrong sex) to worry about bone breaks, think again.

One of the reasons you might be losing bone density is the foods you eat. A lot of today’s foods simply don’t support healthy bones.

For example, the American dairy industry markets milk as a way to build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis.

The truth? Continue reading
