Would you like a side of Feces with that Steak?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

June 19, 2019

Every now and then I get a patient with a case of food poisoning. The symptoms are readily noticeable. Abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever are the most common.

But in recent months, it seems there has been a noticeable uptick in patients experiencing these symptoms.

It almost feels as though I’m back in the early to mid 2000’s, when cruise ships were plagued with the norovirus. Some of the passengers were patients of mine, who returned from Ft. Lauderdale and Miami based cruises with agonizing symptoms.

While the source of this common type of cruise ship outbreak is very easy to track, it’s not always possible to identify the culprit behind unbearable gastrointestinal distress when you’re at home. Continue reading

Why Aren’t You Eating Enough Seafood?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

June 14, 2019

Seafood is one of those foods that most people want to eat more of… but be cautious.

One of the biggest concerns my patients have is that, while they know the omega-3 fatty acids in wild caught fish are good for them, they worry about mercury levels. So they tend to avoid it. Or they eat farm raised fish that have higher levels of inflammatory fatty acids and added antibiotics.

Others recognize the benefits of seafood, but can’t quite accept the odor and flavor or mouth feel of it.

But there are plenty of folks tell me they love seafood. The only reason that they don’t eat more of it is because they often make the “wrong” decision when… Continue reading

5 Habits that Reduce Risk of Cancer, Dementia & Early Death

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

June 10, 2019

A couple of weeks ago while catching up on some of the latest scientific health insights, I ran across some news out of Brazil.

It turns out that 30% of cancer deaths in Brazil are linked to just five things. An unhealthy diet, lack of physical activity, excess weight, smoking and alcohol.

It caught my eye, but didn’t surprise me in the least.

However, within an hour I ran across a World Health Organization news release. It was a synopsis of new WHO guidelines outlining ways to help reduce the risk of dementia. Continue reading

Guacamole, Chocolate and Nuts are NOT Off-Limits

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 31, 2019

T.J. has struggled with weight for most of his life.

Yet somehow, every time he gained an extra 20, 30 or 50 pounds, he managed to drop them again. Usually using drastic measures… like fad diets and extreme workouts.

Once T.J. achieved his weight loss goals, he would revert back to his regular habits. His weight would creep up again. And a couple of years later he would go through the entire weight loss process all over again.

It was like a Merry-Go-Round. Up and down… up and down. Continue reading

3 Ways to Heal Your Leaky Gut

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 22, 2019

Today there are a large number of health conditions that mainstream medicine doesn’t recognize.

One of the most disturbing of them is abnormally increased intestinal permeability, commonly called leaky gut syndrome.

I’ve been evaluating leaky gut patients for decades. And I’ll tell you right now. It’s not a “mystery” illness. It’s not a gray area, fake disease or hypothetical condition.

It is a very serious health concern that is overlooked daily by health professionals all across the U.S. Continue reading

The Scary Truth about Impossible Burgers

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 15, 2019

Last month there was a lot of hoopla about Burger King’s latest fare: The Impossible Whopper.

The big news? Burger King started testing these plant-based burgers at certain locations in the St. Louis area. And since it was well received, they’ll start rolling them out nationally.

As far as I was concerned, this was “non-news”… just another way for a fast food chain to make their food sound healthier than it really is. Other chains like White Castle and Wahlburgers have already done it.

So imagine my surprise when I went out to eat at a relatively upscale Italian restaurant last weekend and came face-to-face with a menu that included… yes! An Impossible Burger. Continue reading

Surprising Ways You Might be Harming your Kidneys

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 13, 2019

In the May 3rd issue of Advanced Natural Wellness I talked about COPD, the 3rd cause of disease related deaths here in the U.S.

Today I’d like to talk about another killer that ranks in the top 10 leading causes of death. And just like lung disease, it’s something people don’t think much about until they’re diagnosed with it.

I’m talking about chronic kidney disease (CKD).

Now, the problem with kidney disease is that you can’t see it. In fact, you may not even feel ill or notice any symptoms until it has reached advanced stages. But once you reach that point, there is no turning back. Continue reading

Go Ahead: Eat More Salsa and Guacamole

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 10, 2019

I’m busy. I work hard all day long. At closing time I’m often stuck in the office doing paperwork for two or three more hours. I’m worn out by the time I get home. And when I get there, the last thing I want to do is cook.

Sound familiar?

I hear this same litany from my patients, day in and day out. But for some reason, they seem to think I don’t “get it”. Continue reading

Here’s a Lung Bombshell you NEVER Expected…

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 3, 2019

Here’s an odd and random statistic…

COPD is third highest cause of death here in the U.S., following right on the heels of heart disease and cancer. This means more people die from chronic respiratory disease each year than from stroke, Alzheimer’s, diabetes or influenza.

So I find it strange that people aren’t talking about it.

My patients sure aren’t. Continue reading

Surprise! Popular GERD Testing Doesn’t Actually Work.

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

May 1, 2019

The number of patients I have who think they have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is startling. Some of them received the diagnosis from their previous physician. Others have self-diagnosed their heartburn as GERD.

And most of them slug down heartburn meds like they’re candy.

Well let me tell you a little-known fact about how most doctors diagnose gastric reflux.

In a large number of cases, primary care providers perform something called a proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) test. It’s a super easy test. But it’s extremely unscientific. Continue reading
