  • Will a flu shot stop you from getting the flu?
  • Here’s why you don’t need the influenza vaccine
  • Boost immunity to slash flu risk

“Doc, shouldn’t I get a flu shot?”

This always seems to be the number one question on my patients’ minds around this time of year. And they’re always surprised by my answer.

As a vaccine, the flu shot is woefully inadequate.

For example, the 2013 vaccine was a mere 9% effective against influenza A (H3N2 virus) in adults 65 and older. And the 2015 vaccine was only 12 to 14% effective against the virus in all adults – no matter what their age. Continue reading

Can Gut Bacteria End Your Depression?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

November 4, 2016

  • Don’t let winter dampen your spirits
  • Simple remedies to conquer winter doldrums
  • Feed your gut for a happier brain

Do you start feeling sluggish and withdrawn around this time of the year? Does eating a big bowl of ice cream and sleeping the rest of the day sound better than dragging yourself out of the house?

If so, you might tell yourself this is natural. After all, it’s getting dark earlier and it’s cold outside. Isn’t that when you’re supposed to hibernate and store energy like a bear in its’ winter lair?

While that explanation might make sense, it doesn’t mean you have to trudge through the short days of winter feeling unhappy and low-spirited as you watch your waistline expand. Continue reading

Crohn’s: Genetics or Something Else?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

October 21, 2016

  • Are bowel disorders genetic or environmental?
  • The bugs in your bowels
  • Stop “managing” your symptoms and take control

When bowel problems strike, diarrhea, abdominal pain and fatigue can send even the hardiest person running to their doctor’s office.

In many cases these types of symptoms are a one-time event caused by bad food or a viral infection… even excess gas or stress. It will generally run its course, and you’ll be feeling better again in a matter of days.

But if you have Crohn’s disease or another inflammatory bowel disorder (IBD), it’s never a “one time thing”. If it’s there now, it will always be a constant and painful reminder that all is not well within your body. So what can you do? Continue reading

Stress Free in 5 Minutes

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

  • Little-known cause of inflammation
  • Can stress really give you a heart attack?
  • Here’s what you can do to address the stress

Let’s face it. Nobody likes being stressed out. It makes you feel out of sorts, messes with your mind and can send you into a tailspin.

But hey… that’s life, right? You deal with it and move on.

If only it were that easy.

For the most part, folks don’t actually deal with their stress. Instead, they hold it inside. Eventually, the tension builds into a state of constant worry and anxiety. It can become such a normal part of your life that you may not even realize you’re carrying it around.

However the cumulative effects of all this stress can do a lot more than leave you feeling tense and strained. It also sets off a chain reaction that places your body in an inflammatory state. Continue reading

2 Healing Juices You Should Drink Every Day

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 15, 2016

  • 2 healing juices you should drink every day
  • The power of pomegranate
  • Fortify your health with cherry juice

One of the things I like about certain juices is that the nutrients are highly concentrated and easy to absorb. But that doesn’t mean all juices have a positive impact on your health. In fact, many store-bought juices aren’t any better than drinking a soda. Just read the label to see how many grams of sugar  have been added…one teaspoonful = 3 grams; so that favorite juice with 28 grams of sugar has more than 9 teaspoons full of sugar!

However, there are two juices that are real stand-outs when it comes to boosting your health. They do everything from protecting your heart to slashing your risk of cancer and crushing joint pain.

It’s hard to say that one is better than the other, because they both have a great deal of power behind them. On the other hand, there’s no reason you can’t enjoy each of them on a regular basis.

Let’s take a look at what these juices can do for you… Continue reading

Why am I so Bloated?

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 5, 2016

  • Why are you always so bloated?
  • Common digestive disorders can make you swell up like a balloon
  • Beat the bloat with these simple tips

Nobody likes the feeling of being bloated. Whether you’re a man or a woman it’s flat-out uncomfortable. It doesn’t look very flattering either.

In many cases, the cause of bloat is surprisingly simple. You ate too much or too fast, slugged down a carbonated beverage or indulged in a heavily processed food.

Other times, it’s harder to pinpoint a cause. And if you frequently experience bloating, not knowing the source can be extremely frustrating. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t hope. In many cases, bloating is directly linked to digestive issues.

Some of these are easier to address than others. Continue reading

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

  • Never take these drugs unless absolutely necessary
  • The scary side of antibiotics
  • Strategies to dodge the side effects of antibiotic treatment

Some patients insist that they need an antibiotic for their bronchitis or cold – even though these problems are rarely caused by bacteria. Still, there are plenty of doctors who will pull out the prescription pad and satisfy their request.

I’m not one of them.

Now, this doesn’t mean I never prescribe antibiotics. I do. When they’re absolutely necessary! Continue reading

In This Issue:

  • Nature’s best remedies for cold and flu

Well, it’s official. Cold and flu season is here.

Some of my patients are loading up on antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers. Others are showing up at my office with runny noses and hacking coughs…along with demands for an antibiotic.

If you fall into either of these categories, let me set the record straight. Continue reading

  • Antibiotic resistant bacteria gains ground in hospitals
  • Half of hospital deaths linked to sepsis
  • Quick tips to build immunity

These days, coming out of the hospital healthier than you went in is a crap shoot. That’s because these facilities are breeding grounds for antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Now, MRSA is probably the first thing that pops into your mind. That’s because it’s in the news a lot. What you don’t hear, however, is that almost all invasive MRSA infections are associated with health care. In fact, more than a million patients are infected each year.
