RX For Hypertension

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

High blood pressure is the most common of all cardiovascular diseases and the leading cause of heart attack and stroke—the first- and third-leading causes of death among Americans. It’s so out of control that, according to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Association, nearly one-third of Americans suffer from hypertension (high blood pressure). Continue reading

Do You Want McStatins With That?

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

The headline sounded like a bad joke—Doctor urges fast food restaurants to hand out statin drugs. The problem is, it’s no joke.

In a recent paper published in the American Journal of Cardiology, Dr. Darrell Francis of the Imperial College in London suggested that fast food restaurants should dispense free cholesterol-lowering medications along with their cheeseburgers and fries. The goal? To offset the harmful health effects of these foods.   Continue reading

Pipe Dreams

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

Here’s a nice little nugget of truth—you are only as healthy as your arteries. Your arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to other parts of the body. When these arteries become damaged—a condition called atherosclerosis—this blood flow can be impeded or even completely blocked, so it’s essential to keep your arteries in good shape. Open Up Clogged Arteries
By David Blyweiss, M.D.

When a patient is diagnosed with cancer, they can become paralyzed with fear. But most types of cancer pale in comparison to America’s biggest killer—heart disease. Does Cholesterol Really Matter?

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

For years, doctors have been lecturing their patients about the evils of cholesterol. High is bad, especially if your total cholesterol tops 200 mg/dL and your low-density or LDL cholesterol is over 130 mg/dL. To talk to most physicians—including cardiologists—the higher your cholesterol, the closer you are to a guaranteed heart attack. But that may not be accurate. Continue reading

Does Low Cholesterol Cause Cancer?

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

Virtually all of the mainstream doctors I know are on an unrelenting mission to slash total and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels as far as they can. While this might (and I say “might” because there’s no solid evidence that moderate cholesterol levels contribute to heart attacks) reduce cardiovascular disease, there’s mounting evidence linking very low cholesterol levels to cancer. A Sensitive Issue

By Bonnie Jenkins

Salt. It can bring out the flavor in many of the foods we eat and it’s critical to good health. In fact, we couldn’t survive without it. Sodium chloride, the technical name for salt, regulates blood pressure and fluid volume. It also carries nutrients into cells, keeps calcium and other minerals soluble in the blood, helps to regulate muscle contractions, plays a part in nerve stimulation and is necessary for the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. But too much can be just as dangerous as not enough, particularly for those who are sensitive to salt. Continue reading
