Bitter Melon Helps Maintain Normal Glucose Levels and Reduce Total Cholesterol and Triglycerides

By Bonnie Jenkins, Advanced Natural Wellness

It’s no secret that Americans are losing the weight game. In fact, nearly half of us are overweight, making us world leaders in terms of excess pounds.

What isn’t nearly as well known is that the fattening up of America is causing the rapid escalation of a cluster of health conditions – insulin resistance, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and low HDL (“good”) cholesterol – known as Syndrome X. Continue reading

Stanols vs. Statins

By David Blyweiss, M.D.

By now, I’m sure you know my position on statin drugs—they are dangerous and often prescribed unnecessarily. For my patients with unhealthy cholesterol levels, I often opt for phytosterols as an important part of a safe and effective strategy to bring down both their total and LDL cholesterol. Phytosterols, compounds in plants with chemical structures similar to cholesterol, block food-based cholesterol from being absorbed into the bloodstream. As popular as statin drugs are, the doctors who prescribe them are finding one unexpected problem: Up to 40 percent of their patients either stop taking them or they refuse to take them in the first place! I’m not surprised. Statins carry a host of side effects, including gastrointestinal problems, headache, dizziness, fatigue, rash and sleep disturbances. More serious side effects include muscle weakness, myopathy, nerve damage, liver damage and rhabdomyolysis – the breakdown of muscle tissue that can lead to potentially fatal kidney failure. I’ve written a lot over the years about the importance of vitamin D. From cancer prevention to its importance for healthy bones, the value of the sunshine vitamin has been making headlines for the last few years. But, if you think you know everything there is to know about vitamin D, think again. Continue reading

A Case For Chelation

By Dr. David Blyweiss, Advanced Natural Wellness

Heavy metal. If you’re under the age of 30, you might think I’m talking about music (although, in my book, calling it music might be a topic for debate). But if you are middle age or older, you probably know that I’m referring to those natural—yet toxic—compounds like lead, mercury and arsenic that are linked to numerous health problems. Continue reading
