live longer with later retirement, retiring later in life

Retire Later, Live Longer

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

February 3, 2020

I recently had someone ask me what I planned to do when I retired… I think my answer surprised her.

You see, even though I’m past the traditional age of retirement, I don’t see myself ever stopping my work.

I just enjoy talking with people about functional medicine too much.  I enjoy seeing patients.  And I enjoy training and educating – especially when it’s at an international conference.

I don’t plan on retiring, because if I retire, I’m putting myself at risk of an earlier death. Continue reading

Super Nuts for Heart, Brain and Waistline

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

“Sometimes you feel like a nut… sometimes you don’t!”

This jingle immediately comes to my mind when I think about nuts. But in all seriousness, I do love nuts.

My days here at the clinic can be pretty hectic. And like many people, I don’t always have enough time to sit down and eat a meal at lunch.

On days when that happens, you’ll often find me munching on a handful of almonds, walnuts, or cashews. Continue reading

Fountain of Youth at Your Fingertips

What if I told you I had a secret that could slow down how quickly you age?

In just a few weeks it can help you look and feel younger than you are. It lowers blood pressure, improves arterial function and slashes your risk of heart disease.

It can crush blood sugar and insulin problems associated with diabetes, melt excess weight off your body and slash your inflammation levels. Continue reading

Supercharged Food Combinations

I have a lot of fun cooking at home.

Usually, I play some upbeat music from an artist like Caro Emerald. (She’s great…look her up.) Then I slide on my cutting gloves and make neat little bowls filled with each of my ingredients… just like Jamie Oliver and his five ingredient meals..

The cutting gloves are great because you only need to add a slice of finger once on a mandolin to learn your lesson.

Once done chopping, I can just toss my perfectly portioned ingredients into a cooking pot and let the magic begin. Continue reading

Simple “Movement:” The Key to Lasting Health

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

August 29, 2019

Most of my patients HATE the thought of exercise.

They even hate the word exercise. So, basically, telling them they need to exercise is like telling them they need to be “exorcised!”

Yup…exercise / exorcise…pot-ay-to / pot-ah-to…both equally horrible for many.

But really, we can replace this terrible word with another word that is easier to swallow…“move.” Continue reading

Green Smoothie

Better than Juicing

It’s not true that “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I’m a doctor, so I should know…

It’s actually two apples!

Jokes aside, I love fresh fruits and vegetables. They’re loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are good for my health… and yours.

All of these nutrients work together to slash your risk of cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other age-related health concerns.

But when we’re talking about eating fruits and vegetables, I wish people would stop trying to juice their fruits and veggies… and remember the importance of chewing them instead. Continue reading

Some Patients Swear this Saved their Lives

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

July 1, 2019

I urge all of my patients and readers to participate in regular physical activity. But not all of them follow that advice.

One of the biggest complaints I hear is “I don’t have enough time.”

Baloney! If you have enough time to watch TV, check social media, talk and text with friends – or whatever else you do with your time – then there is certainly a way to block off 15 to 30 minutes of your day to save your health… and your life.

Next on the list are the doubters. “I’m too old… too fat… too out of shape.” Continue reading

The Next Best Thing to the Fountain of Youth

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

My four-year-old grandson is a blur of activity. He’s constantly on the move… running, jumping, dancing and bouncing his way through the house.

This is the thing about kids. They’re full of energy. They’ve got all of those youthful sirtuins, telomeres and mitochondria powering up their small bodies.

We adults? Not so much. Continue reading

Is Portion Distortion making you Fat? Here’s the Answer!

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

Overeating is built into our genes. It comes from the days when our ancestors experienced long periods of famine.

Once food became available again, they didn’t just take five bites of it and say “ Leftovers for lunch tomorrow! ”

No way. Continue reading

How My Mom Destroyed Every Vegetable She Ever Cooked

By David Blyweiss, M.D., Advanced Natural Wellness

March 4, 2019

When I was a kid I wasn’t allowed to leave the table until I ate all of my vegetables. “They’re good for you!” my Mom would exclaim.

The problem was, she didn’t know how to cook them.

Broccoli and cauliflower were soggy masses of florets that had been boiled to death. Asparagus turned into a slimy mass. Carrots lost every bit of their crunch.

And there wasn’t an ounce of flavor in any of them. (Needless to say, I wasn’t a vegetable-loving kid.) Continue reading
